Statues against Malaria

leave a comment »

Students of the Hogeschool Rotterdam, covered several statues in the center of Rotterdam with mosquito nets. Their goal is to draw attention to the fight against malaria.

The mosquito nets are part of a major campaign against malaria. The aim of the action is to raise money so that can be distributed 50,000 mosquito nets in Africa to people who need it.

The campaign ends on World Malaria Day, April 25. In conclusion, on that day the world’s largest mosquito net will be hung over the Euromast. With this action, the organization also hopes for a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The caricaturistic face radiates with satisfaction, but in a crazy manner. It reminds me of the shoppers who rush from shop to shop to buy clothes and stuff that they do not need.

Anyhow, I think Thomas Puckey, a Brit who works in the Netherlands since 1978 as a sculptor and teacher, did a great job. He made a piece of art, that I not only love, but I also like about the meaning. Not every artist succeeds in this…
