Innocent dance

leave a comment »

I ventured an innocent dance on the lively music of Frankie & The Heartstrings Rotown during their concert last Wednesday. The present press corp appreciated my effort and photographed me in action on the dance floor.

Above photo by Robert Tjalondo can also be seen on the site of national TV station VPRO http://images.vpro.nl/images/44707931+s%28500%29 . It was quite a shock to find myself there, because although excited, I’m not a very good dancer. Robert on the other hand is an expert, because he made a pretty attractive picture. On the face of my dance partner is not even a shred of fear in sight. It even seems that she likes it!?

Grote Prijs Zuid Holland – Singer/Songwriter final in Rotown

leave a comment »

On Sunday, April 4, the Grote Prijs van Zuid-Holland ended with the final Singer/Songwriter in Rotown Rotterdam. Contestants were La:Ra,  Scarlet Mae (2nd Prize), The Candides,  Bryan van Putten, The Parents (1st Prize) and  Capisce? (3rd Prize). The Grote prijs van Zuid-Holland is an initiative by Popunie.

Here is a selection of photos I took.

La:Rahttp://www.myspace.com/whenlarrymetstanley
Around her sixth Lara Stanisic developed a passion for music when she learned how to play the piano. She is inspired by literature, uncertainties and artists like Kate Bush.

The Candideshttp://www.myspace.com/thecandides
Inspired by legends such as Chopin, The Beatles and Jeff Buckley, Fergal Heeney and Jessica Korte are The Candides. Original sound, style interpretation, strong songs and a bio that bulges of positive reviews.

Scarlet Maehttp://www.myspace.com/scarletmaemusic
Scarlet Mae is the band of singer, pianist and songwriter Marije van Rijn. The songs she writes are a combination of pop with a jazzy sound that are a bit reminiscent of acts like Room Eleven. With Caroline Kamp on bass and Daan van Kasteren on drums, Scarlet Rae has a warm sound and a lot of potential.

Bryan van Puttenhttp://www.myspace.com/bryanvanputten

(Bryan replaced “Grain” who could not attend because of personal circumstances)

Autobiographical lyrics and an introspective personality underlie the music of Bryan van Putten. They are honest songs about true stories and gentle feelings drawn from the depths of the soul.

The Parentshttp://www.myspace.com/theparentsnl
Tamara Woestenburg’s The Parents is an original act that excels in strong songs and  original arrangements. With her velvety voice, this lady knows how to fascinate both audience and jury.

Capisce?http://www.myspace.com/capiscemattokim
A singer/songwriter duo consisting of Matto Kranenburg and Kim van Roijen asking us if we have understood. After their performance in Rotown I’m convinced that Capisce? understands the beauty of rhythm and live music!

Motel Mozaïque 2010, April 8 through April 11

leave a comment »

After writing about the Bevrijdingsfestival (http://wp.me/punIp-q3) I realized that I had forgotten another festival that really deserves attention: Motel Mozaïque.

Motel Mozaïque is THE Music, Art & Performance festival in Rotterdam, since 2001. Besides good concerts and a very relaxed atmosphere it offers guided tours through Rotterdam (free) and a sleeping project. (sleeping in art or on special locations in Rotterdam)

This year Motel Mozaïque will kick off on Thursday April 8 and it will last till Sunday April 11. Thursday and Sunday consist of free program, tickets are required for Friday and/or Saturday.

The festival is held at various music, theatre and art venues in the city centre of Rotterdam:  Rotterdamse Schouwburg, WATT, Lantaren/Venster, Rotown, CBK ao. All venues are nearby Central Station and can be reached within a couple of minutes by foot.

At this moment it is not possible to name all the acts that will perform on the festival. Here are some names among others that are confirmed: Thursday April 8 TV Buddhas (free); Friday April 9 Mumford & Sons, Fuck Buttons, Admiral Freebee, Fool’s Gold, Isbells, The Strange Boys; Saturday April 10 Angus & Julia Stone, Band of Horses, Noah and the Whale, Everything Everything,  Fink, Hudson Mohawke, Crystal Antlers

Tickets are still available. At the festival you have to exchange your tickets for a wristband which gives you entrance to all festival venues. However, MotMoz is a festival and therefore not all visitors can fit in just one venue, so if you definitely don’t want to miss a specific show, make sure to be there on time!

Postman invasion Rotterdam

Postman On Fire

Last Sunday ( September 6) Postman invaded Rotterdam to promote his new album ‘Postman’, which will be available in stores from 11 September.

Postman Infra Red

Remon Stotijn, a.k.a. The Anonymous Mis, a.k.a. Postman played three acoustic gigs (at Bouwput Calypso, Baroeg and WATT ), a student jam at WDMC  and a gig with band at Rotown.

The Hotstepper went to the  acoustic concert in Watt. I really enjoyed it! Not only Stotijn, but the entire band seemed full of confidence and the concert was relaxed and of high quality!

Because I didn’t want to use flash, the photos are a bit grainy…. I like the effect though. (no special effects needed…)

If you’ve missed Postman last Sunday, bare in mind that the CD release party will be during the Wereld van de Witte de With Festival on Friday 11 Sep. So if you want to see Postman in action in Rotterdam soon, here’s your chance!
