Pedestrian bridge Luchtsingel

leave a comment »

The area around Hofplein in the centre of Rotterdam was once a bustling district but is now dominated by speeding traffic. To give cyclists and pedestrians more space again, Zones Urbaines Sensibles (ZUS)is building a temporary pedestrian bridge here in a project entitled I Make Rotterdam. This will reconnect the city centre with the northern districts. Called Luchtsingel (Dutch for ‘raised promenade’), the bridge will be largely completed by April 2012 and is just the first step in the plan to make Hofplein a lively pedestrian area once more.

Luchtsingel is being realised through crowdfunding. Everybody can get involved in erecting this bridge. Participants pay a contribution in exchange for having their name written on a plank, piece or component of the bridge. Some 17,000 planks are needed to construct Luchtsingel, and work starts in February. The length of the bridge depends on the number of planks purchased.

I just purchased a plank. It’s only 25€ and you’re name will live forever. You too can take part in the Luchtsingel project through www.imakerotterdam.nl.There are still plenty of planks on sale.

Luchtsingel is a project by ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles] in collaboration with Hofbogen B.V. Luchtsingel is being built within the framework of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). The idea for a raised promenade first surfaced in the Central District master plan drawn up by the city of Rotterdam and Maxwan Architecten. This master plan dictates that Schiestraat will be realigned as the continuation of Delftse Plein, making a pedestrian connection logical. According to the current plans, construction of this pedestrian bridge is planned in 30 years. The area cannot wait that long, however. Crowdfunding allows the bridge to be financed in an alternative way, namely directly by the public. This means that construction can start decades before it is planned. The necessary improvement in the quality of the area is therefore no longer fully dependent on policy plans and real estate developments. With the construction of Luchtsingel, ZUS wants to test the policy framework and design visions for the city of Rotterdam and to experiment with alternative development strategies for the city.

Metro @ Rotterdam Centraal Station (MCS)

with one comment

metro @ rotterdam CS

After years of construction the new metro station is open in Rotterdam Central Station. The newplatform is a respite for travellers. High ceilings, white walls and a lot of bright and even colourful lights give the platforms a fresh and modern appearance. This in combination with the fact that the platforms and stairs are wide, gives the travellers a sense of freedom that can not be equaled in many of the older metro stations. I have not met anyone who is not happy with it.

Rotterdam Central Station is the home of the Erasmus line. This is Rotterdam’s oldest subway line, which was opened on February 9, 1968 by Princess Beatrix and her husband Prince Claus. It is also called the North-South line. At the opening in 1968 it was one of the world’s shortest subway lines: only 5.9 kilometers between Rotterdam Centraal and shopping center Zuidplein on the left bank. In 2007 the Erasmus RandstadRail Line service on the route HofpleinDen Haag Centraal became operational. An extension to Rotterdam Centraal is planned to be operational in 2010.

The total network length of the Rotterdam metro lines (excluding RandstadRail) is 55.3 kilometers, of which 15.3 kilometers run underground and 8.5 kilometers is implemented as light rail. The operation is performed by the RET.

Tangerino again!

Tangerino wipe outTangerino is still on the move. Tangerino in a tunnel again

Although it is not easy for the little orange fellow to settle in Rotterdam (after all he is illegal) he is doing his best to find himself decent housing and leaving a positive contribution to the townscape.

Here’s an example of how he was brutally extinguished from a wall of the Martiem Museum, but also one of him inhabiting another tunnel near to Hofplein.

View from the fountain

with 2 comments

Yesterday night, around three, I did something I had never done before. For no reason, just because I could…

We had gone to a concert in Breda, and were walking home from Central Station. At Hofplein I wondered how Rotterdam would look like if I were the fountain?

Only one way to find out… So I climbed into the bassin and walk towards the middle. I must say, it was refreshing!

Tip: If you do it, do it at night, because for some reason it’s illegal…
