Dine on a special location

leave a comment »

The next three weeks, Berlin has one additional restaurant. Behind a battered door Tony Hornecker opened the new pop-uprestaurant “The Pale Blue Door“. Once inside, a cheerful ratatouille of tree houses, rickety stepladders and colorful tablecloths and curtains awaits you.

Pop-uprestaurants are improvised restaurants on a temporary location. The emphasis is on the temporal aspect, so you could call it guerrilla restaurants. Besides eating, perception is an important aspect. Because the locations of the restaurants are not particularly typical, decoration is very important.

The British set designer Tony Hornecker is  already an experienced  pop-uprestaurateur. Previously he opened (and closed) successful pop-uprestaurants in other major cities in the world: Santiago, Buenas Aires and London. He was also at the Glastonbury Festival in England. Each restaurant is unique, but some of the elements used are part of the basic. Thus, the pale blue door from Horneckers house in London.

I can not wait for Hornecker to come to the Netherlands. (i.e.: Rotterdam) As is now widely known, I have a great passion for good food and places can not be crazy enough, as long as they serve food and drinks. Unfortunately it is not known whether Hornecker will pop up in the Netherlands. Next year a tour of South America in on the agenda.

Antichic and Boerengat: Runner up and winner of Restaurantweek August 2010

Antichic: Winner of the local Restaurantweek prize in 2009 and winner of the national prize during the Restaurantweek in March this year. When I was asked where I wanted to eat at the Restaurantweek in August 2010, I did not need to think. And picking Antichic was certainly not a bad choice! The reception by the owners was good and cordial. Presentation and service were equally good and the food was delicious and very enjoyable. After the four-course dinner – we extend standard with an extra course – my table mates and I were unanimous in our opinion. An excellent choice, a very pleasant introduction, and rightly so that this restaurant was declared winner the last time.
I therefore eagerly looked forward to the unveiling of the (new) winner of this edition of Restaurantweek. Would Antichic again be crowned with ‘gold’ by visitors of the Restaurantweek? Unfortunately, AntiChic was overthrown by Boerengat. From experience I can say that this is no disgrace. On the contrary, because when I visited that restaurant last year, I was surprised by it’s sheer class.
As Rotterdam and lover of good food and fine wines, I am proud that Rotterdam is the home of these two wonderful restaurants. Both restaurants, I can heartily recommend. Boerengat, congratulations on your award, and at Antichic I say: this time silver, but I know you guys will not leave it here. I know where I am going to eat next year!

Rotterdam has introduced a city guide app. The Rotterdam app gives visitors and inhabitants constant access to convenient city info via their mobile phones. It provides access to a city guide with information on attractions, museums, hotels, restaurants and shops and it also includes a city map and a dynamic events calendar. To download the app, users need to open m.rotterdam.info/download with their mobile phone.

Once the app is installed you can explore Rotterdam on-the-go  on your mobile phone.  This mobile city guide highlights the very best that Rotterdam has to offer. Using the application will not require an internet connection or additional roaming costs. The content is stored in the application including the offline maps and the entire events calendar is downloaded at the first time use. You only need an Internet connection to  update the events calendar or if you want to interact with the Web.

The application offers information and images for over 500 locations in the city. You can call the location directly from the app. View the calendar for each location to see what’s on or save the location as a favorite for later reference.

Southside Cuisine

Wijkkeuken van Zuid has opened its doors in May at ‘t Gemaal. Chef Cooks Harmen and Hendrikus Sliep are in charge and  they organize weekly activities. During market days, every Wednesday and Saturday it has a terrace with a fair priced menu and where you can enjoy a snack and a drink. Each time a product of the market is highlighted for example, kohlrabi, fennel, fruit, nuts. Several methods of preparation are shown. One dish is for sale and other dishes are offered to the public to taste. From Sunday to Monday the kitchen is open to chefs, local caterers, and people like you and me. The idea is to combine all the flavours that Afrikaander market has to offer. (that is from all the corners of the World!)

Open Kitchen is open to all residents with good cooking ideas! More information on: www.kosmopolisrotterdam.nl or www.freehouse.nl

In anticipation of the most beautiful terrace in Rotterdam

Borgo d’Aneto is doing well. Their website states that they are often fully booked on Friday night, so that they now also open on Thursday! See www.borgodaneto.nl for details.
But there is more good news! My favourite Trattoria finally gets the lovely terrace, where we have been waiting for so long!

Look at the beautiful quay … The drab gray of the river is beautifully reflected in the stones. The Dutch sky with kind white clouds is ready to welcome the newcomer. And The Hotstepper can not wait. Say goodbye to the improvised terrace.

Today it looks maybe bald, but tomorrow they start working on it and with a little luck he drinks this Whitsun weekend a soft red house wine on the terrace. Or, perhaps that lovely chilled white wine? The view is spectacular anyway! Barges sail back and forth and occasionally a floating crane passes through. Across the skyline of Rotterdam radiates:  Delftse Poort, Town Hall, the Laurens,  De Hef, you name it …

See you soon at Rotterdam’s Most Beautiful terrace!
